“Uncommon Wisdom 2”

Proverbs 31:10-31 describes “a capable woman.” She seeks, works, and provides. She rises at night, provides food, and oversees her servants and household. She considers and buys a field, plants a vineyard, sells merchandise, and spins clothing. She extends her hands to the poor, even while she provides good things for her household. She herself is dressed in strength and wears fine garments of royal purple linen. This passage portrays a remarkable woman.

Often, this text is used on Mother’s Day to express gratitude to mothers, at memorial services to honor a godly wife and mother, or during women’s retreats. However, when we limit its use to these occasions, we miss its broader message. The woman character in Proverbs 31 is active both inside and outside her home. She works really hard, and her hard works blesses her family and also blesses the marketplace and the entire community. Wisdom, as depicted through her, provides for the needs of all.

Please, come and join us in person or on our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel at 10:00 am on Sunday morning as we explore what true wisdom from the Bible means. All are invited!

Woodridge UMC is having a craft and vendor fair on Saturday, November 9th from 9 am to 2 pm.  Last year’s sale was successful.  Let’s see if we can make it a bigger success this year!  We are currently looking for crafters/vendors, donations for the bake sale from our members and volunteers for the bake sale raffle or raffle table and help price the items.  Also, does anyone live on a main street or high traffic area?  We have a couple of lawn signs for advertising the sale that would be great in that kind of location. Contact the church office if you can help in any way or if you have any questions.

This opportunity will be offered Sunday mornings, 8:45 - 9:50 am, September 8th - 29th. Pastor Dave Yim and Charlotte Ashworth will be leading this experience.  For more information, contact Charlotte Ashworth at bacatx@gmail.com or the church office.

Grace and peace to you, Children of a Loving God,

I commend to you the following pastoral letter from the United Methodist Council of Bishops. In these times when rhetoric in the public square dehumanizes the stranger and the newcomer, we remember that God requires us to love our neighbors.

Peace,

Outreach Opportunities

September Outreach Offering

Boy Scout Repair the Harm to Children – Matching Gift Opportunity

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) filed for bankruptcy relief in 2020, overwhelmed by lawsuits that grew to involve more than 84,000 allegations of child sexual abuse related to the Boy Scout program as far back as the 1960s. The United Methodist Church became involved because of our long-standing relationship with Scouting troops in our churches.  As part of the settlement, the United Methodist Church has committed to give $30 million over three years to a fund to compensate survivors and to work with the BSA to address policies, programs and procedures to keep children safe from abuse.

All children in the care of the United Methodist churches should be safe from any kind of harm. Unless repairs are made to children who have been hurt, we are not being honest with the present and future children God brings us.

The Repair the Harm to Children campaign was created by the Northern Illinois Conference to address the needs of the survivors in three ways; listening and providing healing to the survivors, contributing our fair share to the survivor fund established by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and working to create safeguards against harm in the future.

The pledge from our church is to contribute $1200 each year for three years to the Boy Scout Survivor Fund.  The September Outreach will help support our goal, as we assist in the healing of survivors and recommit to work toward ending sexual abuse of young people.  Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor all contributions to the September Outreach will be matched up to $1000 to further help us achieve our goal.
