"Being Fruitful"

Galatians 5:13-25 & Luke 9:51-62
This week, we will focus on two Scriptures: Paul’s message to the Galatians and Jesus’ encounter in Samaria. Let’s begin with Paul. According to him, we as Christians are called to freedom. How we use that freedom is crucial in our faith journey. Freedom doesn’t mean doing whatever we want. Instead, we are called to use our freedom to serve each other and to bear the fruit of the Spirit.
In the Gospel reading, as Jesus was heading to Jerusalem, he sought to stay in a Samaritan village. However, the people there did not welcome him and rejected him. When the disciples became upset and wanted to punish them, Jesus turned, rebuked them, and simply moved on to another village. Along the way, someone expressed a desire to follow Jesus. Jesus welcomed him, but the man quickly offered all excuses. Please, come and explore these scriptures with us this Sunday. All are welcome!

Outreach Opportunities

July Outreach Offering - Filipino Churches

As a committee, Outreach has looked for opportunities to be of service on many levels – from local to global.  This month we have identified an international outreach with a local connection.  Our July Outreach will be used to support the nine home churches of our Filipino WUMC members.   We have learned that several of their churches did have damage from storms, including the 6 consecutive tropical cyclones that hit in October and November of last year.  The pastor’s home at one needs repair due to termites.  Other needs churches have include fundraising for a van to do outreach and supplies for Sunday school.  Given that we are supporting multiple congregations, our goal is to give $200 to each church.  We will be using $400 from the Burke Estate Funds to kick off these efforts.

Ways to donate to the July Outreach Offering:

  • Check or cash in an Outreach Offering envelope placed in the offering plate in the
  • Narthex (the room outside the sanctuary) or in the gold-plated mail slot at the church’s east door.
  • Online via our website. Select “Current Month Outreach” in the drop down menu.
  • Text the amount you want to give to 630-449-7121 and select “Current Month Outreach” in the drop down menu.

School Supply Drive
Did you know there are almost 1,100 students in Woodridge School District 68 whose families will struggle to purchase their needed school supplies?
YOU CAN HELP!

Woodridge UMC, Prince of Peace, St. Scholastica, and Christ the Servant Catholic Church are partnering with the Woodridge Rotary Club to provide 600 BACKPACKS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES to Woodridge residents in need.   This is almost double the amount we donated last year. Will you please contribute? We need backpacks as well as the following items:
Filler Paper, Wide Rule                     Narrow Markers, 10 count
Spirals, Wide Rule                             Colored Pencils, 12 count
Pocket/Prong Folders                       Scissors, 5” (sharp point, no blunt)
Crayons, 24 count only                     Highlighters
Pencils, pens (black ink)                   Glue sticks (NO liquid glue)
Broad Markers, 10 count

We will be collecting items throughout the month of July and will be distributing backpacks August 10.   There will be several opportunities to volunteer your time as well in set up, filling backpacks and distribution (August 1,2 and 10).  Sign up will be available in the Narthex – we had a great turnout last year and hope to do even better this year!
