"Why Did the Samaritan Cross the Road?"

Pastor Dave Yim is away visiting family in South Korea through July 18th. This Sunday, our very own Carrie Marcotte will be sharing the message with us!!  Thank you, Carrie!!

Colossians 1:1-14 & Luke 10:25-37
This week, Paul’s letter to the Colossians begins with a prayer. Paul thanks God for their faith, love, and hope- the three great Christian virtues. Paul prays that the Colossians may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will “so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord…bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God…” In Luke’s Gospel, we hear the Parable of the Good Samaritan, in which a Samaritan, a despised outsider, crosses cultural, racial, and religious boundaries (and yes, the road) to show mercy to a wounded man, thereby living “a life worthy of the Lord…bearing fruit in every good work…” Come join us on Sunday to delve deeper into these connected scripture messages and to ponder our own call to love like neighbors and bear fruit that lasts.

Join us in person or on our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel!

Important Information
Frontage Road Construction to Start
We were just informed by the Village of Woodridge that the frontage road to the church will be under construction by the county and completely closed.  Start date was early July, so it could be any day now.  The neighborhood entrance at Woodridge Dr next to the fire department will be CLOSED as will the road between it and Catalpa and other parts of the frontage road at various times during the project.  Please go to Janes and take Sioux. Then, take a RIGHT at Hawthorne to Ravinia to Catalpa. The church is on the corner of the frontage road and Catalpa. This project is scheduled to run from July through October, but our section of the frontage road is Phase 1, so it should be completed sooner. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. See the letter from the Village here. There are flyers in the narthex with the directions and a small map.

Extend the Grace God Gave You

While attending this year’s Celebration of Ministry service, Rev. Danita Anderson was reminded of her own journey through that process.

At her ordination as an elder, the bishop put his hands on her head and charged her to “take authority as an elder to preach the Word of God, to administer the Holy Sacraments and to order the life of the Church; in the name of our Triune God.”

Although there were days she thought she might have fulfilled this better, God’s grace gave her the opportunity to try again.

"The same God who extends grace to us reminds us to extend grace to others,” she says. "How can you find more moments to extend grace in your everyday life?”

Outreach Opportunities

July Outreach Offering - Filipino Churches

As a committee, Outreach has looked for opportunities to be of service on many levels – from local to global.  This month we have identified an international outreach with a local connection.  Our July Outreach will be used to support the nine home churches of our Filipino WUMC members.   We have learned that several of their churches did have damage from storms, including the 6 consecutive tropical cyclones that hit in October and November of last year.  The pastor’s home at one needs repair due to termites.  Other needs churches have include fundraising for a van to do outreach and supplies for Sunday school.  Given that we are supporting multiple congregations, our goal is to give $200 to each church.  We will be using $400 from the Burke Estate Funds to kick off these efforts.

Ways to donate to the July Outreach Offering:

  • Check or cash in an Outreach Offering envelope placed in the offering plate in the
  • Narthex (the room outside the sanctuary) or in the gold-plated mail slot at the church’s east door.
  • Online via our website. Select “Current Month Outreach” in the drop down menu.
  • Text the amount you want to give to 630-449-7121 and select “Current Month Outreach” in the drop down menu.

Ongoing Opportunities
